Pensions Committee
We have again privately pressed the Treasury to introduce the legislation as regards Governors' pensions & other matters recommended in the Report & I believe they are likely to do so before long. Meanwhile it would not be safe to say anything more definite than in your letter 5722 Sep Guils

REC 19 MAY
Government House.
17th April 1909.
With reference to my despatch of the 25th November 1907, Confidential, regarding Mr May's offer and accepting the Governorship.
(c) He has asked whether on retiring at the age of 55 years, he would retain the privilege pension at the rate he now enjoys.
The new Governor's Pension Act has now been passed and it may be as well to send Sir F. Lugard a copy with reference to this despatch and his previous enquiries; explain to him that in due course Nigeria will be scheduled in the Order to be issued under the Act, and that he will, under the Act, have the benefit of his full service as High Commissioner as well as pension for army service, if any has been earned: but point out that he cannot count any period twice for the army pension and for qualification for pension.

(b) He would be allowed to calculate his previous Colonial service as Civil Servant for pension purposes.

My Lord,
Your Lordship's humble, obedient Servant,
